Leading the Future of Sustainable Dairy

Leading the Future of Sustainable Dairy

At Procal Dairies, we’ve always believed in doing things properly — the right milk, delivered the right way, backed by real relationships.

Now, we’re proud to take that philosophy even further with a bold step forward in sustainability: we're the first dairy in Australia to install and operate Popit’s smart recycling technology.

This builds on the recycling practices we already have in place, enhancing how we manage plastic waste at scale.

This new on-site system allows us to begin the process of recycling used milk bottles into raw material — helping us close the loop on plastic waste while delivering the same quality and consistency we’re known for.

👋 A Bit About Us

Procal is a family-owned Australian dairy business, built on strong values and a passion for premium products. Our milk, yoghurt and cream are made with care and delivered fresh daily to cafés, grocers, restaurants and homes across the country.

We pride ourselves on having one of the most modern dairy facilities in Australia, and we're constantly investing in ways to improve — not just our products, but the way we operate behind the scenes.

Introducing this new recycling technology is another example of our ongoing commitment to quality, innovation and sustainability.

♻️ What Is Popit’s Smart Recycling Tech?

Popit is an Australian innovation that’s set to change how dairy businesses manage plastic waste.

The machine we’ve installed at our facility handles the first stage of recycling: it takes used bottles, shreds and rinses them, and bags the material ready for processing. From there, our recycling partner Martogg takes over — transforming the material into high-quality recycled resin that can be blended with virgin plastic to manufacture new milk bottles.

This is just the beginning. In the future, we aim to expand our capabilities as the technology evolves, enabling even greater on-site recycling efficiency.

We’re proud to be the first in the industry to make this move, setting a new standard for circular sustainability in Australian dairy.

🚚 What It Means for Our Customers

Most café owners and retailers are happy to reduce waste — but we also know that efficiency is key.

So here’s the simple ask:
When returning crates, please include only HDPE milk or juice bottles.
No coffee cups. No rubbish. No crushed bottles. And ideally, no lids.

We’ve seen an increase in contamination — things like compostable cups and non-HDPE containers — which our system can’t process. Keeping returns clean means:

  • A smoother collection process

  • Less manual sorting

  • A fully functional recycling system that benefits everyone

🌱 Why It Matters

Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword — it’s our responsibility.

By adopting Popit’s tech and partnering with Martogg, we’re:

  • Reducing our environmental footprint

  • Keeping thousands of bottles out of landfill

  • Leading by example for the industry

  • Creating a smarter, more efficient supply chain

And most importantly, we’re proving that a local, independent dairy can drive meaningful change — often faster than the big players.

📣 What’s Next

This is Stage 1 of our recycling rollout. We’ll continue working closely with Popit and Martogg to improve and scale the process over time. We’re also collaborating on upcoming media opportunities to showcase how innovation is reshaping the future of dairy.

👣 How You Can Help
